National Asthma Control Program (Center for Disease Control / National
Center for Environmental Health)
The National Asthma Control Program supports the goals of Healthy
People 2010 for asthma. The goals of the program are to reduce the
number of deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits,
school or work days missed, and limitations on activity due to asthma.
Community-Based Prevention/Intervention Research Program (National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences)
This program supports a number of asthma projects in urban, socioeconomically
disadvantaged populations.
National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute / National Institute of Health)
This program was initiated in March 1989 to address the growing problem
of asthma in the United States. This program coordinates all federal
asthma activities.
Trans-NIH Obesity Initiative (National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences)
This is a new program in development, and is designed to examine
how the built environment affects obesity and associated co-morbidities.
The program highlights the link between public health concerns and
air pollution from mobile sources.
Centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention
Research
In collaboration with the NIEHS, EPA has funded 12 centers for research.
Five of the centers focus on asthma and all emphasize community-based
approaches to reduce the impact of asthma on children.
