Locomotives & Rail Sector
The objective of the Locomotives and Rail Sector Workgroup is to share information on current and potential emissions reduction projects along the West Coast. The workgroup focuses on topics that include reducing emissions through idle reduction and emerging technologies, exploring innovative financing mechanisms, leveraging federal funds, and sharing lessons learned regarding technologies and practices. Members of this workgroup are integral to its success in implementing innovative locomotives/rail projects. Projects
- Competitive DERA 2012 Replacing a Line-Haul Locomotive: the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District received $700,000 for replacing a cleaner engine in the areas of Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, and San Francisco Bay.
- Competitive DERA 2012 Locomotive Engine Upgrade Project for the Washington Commuter Rail System the Sound Transit: the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency received $1,200,000 to reduce diesel pollution by repowering locomotive engines in partnership with Sound Transit, which travels between Tacoma and Seattle and between Everett and Seattle.
- DERA 2011: Repowering Two Locomotives in the San Joaquin Valley (2011): The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District received $2,000,000 to repower two locomotives in the Valley.
- Competitive 2010 DERA Grant: Repowering Four Switch Yard Locomotives Across California: California Air Resources Board received $3,949,496 to repower four switch yard and short haul locomotives that operate in the South Coast and San Joaquin Valley Air Basins.
- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act: Repowering Switch Yard Locomotives in Southern California: California Air Resources Board received $8,888,888 to repower 8 switch yard locomotives that operate in the South Coast Air Basin.
- American Reinvestment and Recovery Act: Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Locomotive Repower Project: Puget Sound to Clean Air Agency received $2,534,511 to fund cleaner switcher locomotives.
